PROJECT DESCRIPTION_ PYROGEOGRAPHY X SOUTH+NORTH CALI IS AN HOUR-LONG, POST-CINEMATIC EXPERIENCE, SYNTHESISED FROM THE SEMI-SUPERVISED READING OF 800 BILLION ULTRA-PRECISE DATA POINTS, ACQUIRED THROUGH MULTI-SPECTRAL AND MULTI-TEMPORAL AIRBORNE LIDAR––INDEXING APPROX 18,000 SQUARE KILOMETRES OF LANDSCAPE EXPOSED TO WILDFIRES IN SOUTHERN AND NORTHERN PARTS OF CALIFORNIA FROM 2018-2022 AND FLIGHT-TIME ARCHITECTURAL SHOTS OF THE ENCROACHING URBAN-WILDLAND INTERFACE IN AERIAL PLANS.

 

CALIFORNIA HAS ENDURED ITS 4TH YEAR OF SERIAL CONFLAGRATION, EACH SURPASSING THE EPIC SCALE OF THE LAST. IN ITS DERANGED PYROSCAPES, FIRE TAKES ON NOVEL FORMS, PROPAGATING ACROSS THE NEIGHBOURING STATES TO INCINERATE BIOTA AND CONSUME PROHIBITED AND LITHIC FUELS IN THE COLORADO ROCKIES. THE SUPER-HEATED UPDRAFT RUPTURES INTO A DRIED THUNDERSTORM THAT TRIGGERS MORE ARSON. THE DEATH TOLLS DON’T STOP AT HUMANS, INNUMERABLE NON-HUMANS OFTEN PERISH, UN-REPORTED.

 

PYROGEOGRAPHY X SOUTH + NORTH CALI IS A PRODUCT OF ONGOING RESEARCH INTO THE DESIGN INFORMATICS OF MULTI-SPECTRAL ‘AIRBORNE LIDAR’ IN REGIONS EXPOSED TO CLIMATE CHANGE. IN AIRBORNE LIDAR, A FLIGHT-MOUNTED SENSOR FIRES AN AMPLIFIED PULSE OF INFRARED LIGHT TO MEASURE SENSOR-TO-TARGET TIME LAPSE AS WELL AS THE SIGNAL FLUCTUATIONS BETWEEN EMITTED AND REFLECTED RADIATION, RETURNING TOPOGRAPHIC & RADIOMETRIC PROPERTIES OF THE TARGET PHENOMENA IN AN ULTRA-PRECISE POINT CLOUD OF IN-SITU CONDITIONS.
