Urbicide (urb- ‘cities’ and -caedre ‘kill’), designates the annihilation of citadels––the citadel, an agglutinated war. In modern warfare, the urban fabric becomes a medium-course to transform the sanctum into a life-asphyxiating hostile foe, the abode into lacerating shrapnel. The supersonic-bomb blast shatters the built demarcations, setting techno-fossils afloat, ejecting sediments at high speed. The poromechanics ensuing depends on the explosion strength and the ejected miasma.
The citadel caught amidst battle rises as a ‘bombturbated’ calculus, organised through in situ or ex situ incendiary-driven exothermic release. The citadel crystallises the untold tons of leftover ordinance, from the process of pedoturbation; aeroturbation; aquaturbation; argilliturbation; cryoturbation; crystalturbation; faunalturbation; floralturbation; graviturbation; impacturbation; seismiturbation––into an architecture, out of which humans burrow novel affordances of life and death.
This project attempts to simulate bombturbations in silico, using computational fluid dynamic simulation scaffolded on high-resolution remote-sensed point-clouds and radarsats of several cities in the Middle East. The computed bombturbations cross-cut earlier urban-stratigraphic features depth-wise, using parameters of gaseous dynamics and thermodynamic inputs––while inducing local shock-metamorphic features and scorch punctures to generate niches. These niches envelop life amidst bomb-eaten, agglutinated wars.
